Solar Impulse 2

What started as the dream of two Swiss visionaries, Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg, has become a revolutionary discovery much like when the Wright brothers flew for the first time. Bertrand and Andre have achieved the unimaginable - a solar-powered airplane that can fly non-stop, day and night, and is powered by the best solar technology on the market, SunPower solar cells. The very technology that powers many Coachella Valley homes is now powering the Solar Impulse 2.  With a wingspan of 72 meters that is equipped with 17,000 SunPower solar cells, it weighs about 2,300kg (the weight of an average size car). It operates without any fuel except sunlight, and has absolutely no emissions.

Borschberg is the co-founder/pilot and refers to the Solar Impulse as “a flying laboratory for clean technologies”.  Borschberg and Piccard, along with 80+ members of the Solar Impulse Team, say they want to inspire the same spirit of imagination, innovation, and exploration in others. They hope that their journey around the world will help spread the word about clean energy solutions and the boundless potential of solar.
