Net Metering vs The Utility Company

Wednesday 18th of September 2013 3:10 PM

Solar net metering is under attack by utilities, and that’s not good for solar customers, local jobs, or the environment! Net energy metering, or "NEM", is a special billing arrangement that provides credit to customers with solar photo voltaic (PV) systems for the full retail value of the electricity their system generates. What the utilities (Southern California Edison, Imperial Irrigation District, etc.) are claiming is that solar net metering is unfair to non-solar customers. That non-solar customers are having to pay a larger share for transmission and infrastructure charges. However, what the utilities are not telling solar customers is that solar power and net metering are actually benefiting utilities. In fact, according to, solar net metering benefit California utilities by $92.2 million per year! Net metering benefits California utilities through saving on transmission losses, meeting RPS requirements, and investing in transmission and infrastructure. Also, it is creating local jobs, reducing pollution, and making homeowners less reliant on the utilities’ “dirty” energy. Our entire state’s clean energy economy is based on moving forward, not backward, and now is not the time for utilities to obstruct the solar revolution.
